Though he’s only been a KA brother for a little over two years, Shane Laufer has already done so much for this house. Shane was recently elected Number 2 late last semester and looks to bring this chapter to new heights.
“One thing that this fraternity values, which sounds cliché, but would be our brotherhood,” he said. “Everyone in the chapter hangs out with each other, no matter what year you are.”
What positions have you held during your time in Kappa Alpha?
Last year, I served as the chapter’s homecoming chair and organized the homecoming events as a way to help get involved in KA. Then I was recently elected as our new Vice President last winter.
What values do the brothers of Kappa Alpha demonstrate?
One thing that this fraternity values, which sounds cliché, but would be our brotherhood. Everyone in the chapter hangs out with each other, no matter what year you are. Through my years as a KA, I always see lots of the older guys hanging out with the younger guys; we are not separated by pledge class. I truly feel this is a tight-knit chapter.
What is your favorite memory from being in Kappa Alpha so far?
So far, I would say that my best memory so far might have been my pledge retreat during pledgeship. Coming into Tech, I virtually knew no one and after pledging KA, I began to create friendships within my pledge class. I remember going to Will’s property and just really bonding with everyone in my pledge class. It was one of the first times all of us were together to have a good time and get to know each other.
Can you talk a little about being number 2?
Being elected number 2 was a really cool moment for me. About a month or so before elections, I was still not sure if I was going to run for Vice President or not and in the weeks before I decided, with some help from others, that I would run for number 2. I remember during pledgeship how Austin, who was the number 2 during my pledgeship, ran our pledgeship and how I wanted to do what he did. I really wanted to lead the new guys and incorporate them into the fraternity. Then being elected, and seeing how the chapter has confidence in me to be the number 2 was also a very rewarding feeling. As for now, we did not get any pledges during spring rush, so I have just been preparing and organizing for the fall and working with Downing and just trying to help where I can, in preparation for a great fall.
